The birthday of great hockey player Major Dhyanchand is celebrated as National Sports Day on 29 August. On this day, the President is awarded Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Arjuna Award, Dronacharya Award and Major Dhyanchand Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding performance in the field of sports.
